The Midland Planning and Commissioners is recommending a denial of the YMCA Specific Designation Request change
MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) -Continuing coverage of the Midland YMCA Northwest expansion the Midland Planning and Commissioners is recommending a denial of the YMCA Specific Designation Request change.
The designation change is for the time frame when the Y’s childcare center operates.
The Midland YMCA wants to request a time frame to offer childcare services from five am to nine pm.
The 5 am to 9 pm change would help the Midland YMCA meet the needs of working families.
Midland YMCA is requesting the time frame because if they want to have a summer camp or parent’s night out. The Midland YMCA wants to open the facility and have an evening for parents to drop off their kids.
“What we are requesting is to have a set number of children during the working hours rather than a capacity of two hundred people in the building. We assume that several kids are at any hour of the day. we are asking for a limited time frame.” said Midland YMCA incoming Vice Chair Beth Ryan.
But the Planning and Zoning commission is recommending it should be shortened to 7:30 am to 9 pm.
That recommendation is in part because of the traffic near the property.
“Just surrounding traffic increases as a result of the use and talking a little more about safety and those kinds of things. I think those concerns are primarily what drove the ultimate decision to recommend denial.” said Midland Planning & Development Officer Elizabeth Triggs.
