Meet Mrs. Jo Ann Sarabia: Garriga Law Firm teacher giveaway winner
MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) - It’s no secret that the cost of everything has gone up with inflation, including school supplies.
According to the National Retail Federation, on average, Americans are spending about $875 during this back-to-school season.
One Midland ISD received some help with those supply costs from the Garriga Law Firm.
This will be Mrs. Jo Ann Sarabia’s 20th first day of school as a Midland ISD Teacher.
She is a dual language MCL Kindergarten Teacher at Jane Long Elementary School.
Mrs. Sarabia teaches her students in both English and Spanish.
As she gets the finishing touches on her classroom ahead of the new school year, this seasoned teacher is still a bit nervous.
“They say first-day jitters for the kids. Well, the teachers have them as well, believe me,” Mrs. Sarabia explains.
While this may be her 20th year with Midland ISD, Mrs. Sarabia says that each year is unique.
“It does not get old, every year it starts over with the same nervousness and the same excitement,” said Sarabia.
Along with decorating her classroom, she has been gathering extra school supplies for students who may not be able to afford them, that is something she bores the cost of.
“We go out and get our own supplies. Because we don’t want for a student that that’s going to be what hinders them, is that they don’t have the supplies,” said Sarabia.
A cost that Mrs. Sarabia believes is worth every penny.
“I treat them as if they were my own. I want the best for them and to help them be the best version of themselves that they can be,” said Sarabia.
Although she asks nothing in return, one local business is stepping up to help educators cover the cost of some of those needed supplies.
Recently during Wake Up West Texas, Mrs. Sarabia was one of our winners of a $250 gift card from The Garriga Law Firm.
“I was surprised to see my name on there. I was like ‘Oh wow!,” Sarabia exclaimed.
The Garriga Law Firm also awarded four other teachers gift cards.
A bit of relief as prices continue to rise.
“Every little bit helps and this is a great amount.”
With supplies and decorations in place, Mrs. Sarabia’s classroom is ready for the first day of school.
“Thank you for the Garriga Law and CBS7 for doing this for me and for my students. We appreciate you!” said Sarabia.
Midland ISD’s first day of school is Tuesday, August 13.
